Afenyo-Markin Distances Himself from Viral Anti-LGBTQ Bill Post, Says Account Was Compromised

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has distanced himself from a social media post that appeared to criticise the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025 (anti-LGBTQ bill), stating that the publication was unauthorised and that his account had been hacked.
The controversial post, which went viral on Tuesday, suggested that criminalising individuals based on their sexual orientation amounted to punishing people for their identity and personal relationships. It further claimed that such laws crossed a dangerous line no parliament should support.
The message triggered intense reactions online, with many users sharing screenshots amid the heated national debate over the recently passed bill.
However, the post was later deleted and replaced with a disclaimer from the Minority Leader, who urged the public to disregard it.
“Kindly disregard this post. Account was compromised,” the replacement message read.
Parliament passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill on May 29 after considering several amendments. The legislation criminalises LGBTQ-related activities while providing exemptions for legal practitioners, journalists, media organisations, and medical professionals acting within the scope of their professional duties.
The bill continues to generate strong public reactions, with supporters arguing it protects Ghanaian cultural and family values, while critics maintain it raises serious concerns about human rights and fundamental freedoms.
