Health Ministry summons KATH CEO over suspension of emergency admissions

The Ministry of Health has summoned the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, to explain the hospital’s decision to temporarily stop admitting new patients at its Accident and Emergency Centre.

In a letter dated June 3, 2026, signed by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Desmond Boateng, the Ministry noted reports circulating on social media and comments made by the hospital’s Head of Public Affairs on Channel One TV, confirming that the centre was full and unable to accept additional emergency cases.

The Ministry stated that this action contradicts a clear directive from President John Dramani Mahama instructing all hospitals not to turn away emergency patients.

Dr. Baidoo has been directed to appear before the Minister of Health by noon on Thursday, June 4, 2026, to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.

“This is contrary to a clear directive of His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, to hospitals not to turn away emergency cases,” the letter emphasised.

The Ministry said it expects full cooperation from KATH management as it investigates the matter.

The development follows public concern over reports that the Accident and Emergency Centre, designed to accommodate 37 patients, had become severely overcrowded. The hospital has since resumed emergency admissions after a slight improvement in bed availability.
