KATH Suspends New Admissions at Accident and Emergency Centre Due to Overcrowding

The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi has temporarily suspended new admissions at its Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre for 24 hours following severe overcrowding, hospital management has announced.
In a statement issued by the hospital’s Public Affairs Unit, KATH said the 37-bed A&E facility was currently overstretched, managing 61 admitted patients across its critical care zones, with an additional 34 patients awaiting admission.
The decision was taken to prevent further strain on staff and to ensure that critically ill patients already at the centre receive adequate attention and care.
The hospital has therefore advised members of the public requiring emergency services to seek care at other health facilities within the Ashanti Region while it works to stabilise the situation.
Management said it is collaborating with the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate to redirect emergency cases to other hospitals to ease the pressure on the centre.
KATH added that its emergency physicians and medical staff are working hard to manage the current surge, and normal admissions will resume once capacity improves.
The hospital stated that the situation is being closely monitored and reviewed on an ongoing basis.
