Results gathered so far from the Akwatia By Election held on 2nd September 2025 shows victory for the NDC’s Bernard Baidoo. The young lawyer was declared winner of the election, defeating his closest rival, the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu.
Out of a total of 33,516 valid votes cast, Bernard Baidoo pulled 18,199 (54%) votes against Asumadu’s 15,235 votes (45%). The LPG’s candidate, Patrick Owusu trailed with a paltry 82 (0.2%) votes. 303 (0.9%) votes were rejected, bringing the total vote cast to 33,819.
The by election was held pursuant to Article 112 (5) of The 1992 Constitution which defines the procedure for replacing a vacant seat in Parliament. The Akwatia seat had been declared vacant following the sudden death of Ernest Yaw Kumi in July 2025, after a protracted electoral dispute on his Parliamentary election in 2024. The Supreme Court had quashed a contempt ruling against him barely a month earlier
Coincidentally, the now elected MP was the lawyer of his opponent during those stressful weeks of court hearings. One had expected that given the sad and unfortunate passing of the young legislator, voters at Akwatia would have wanted an NPP representation in Parliament.
The outcome of the election clearly shows that the inundation of the constituency by government officials, including many allegations of vote buying and influence peddling about bringing developments to Akwatia, has played a major role in swaying voters. Akwatia has been described as a swing seat, won by the opposition NPP by over 2,000 votes in the 2024 election.
