Defence Minister Dr. Omane-Boamah and Seven Others Die in Helicopter Crash

Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane-Boamah, has tragically passed away alongside seven other individuals in a helicopter crash on the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2025. The military helicopter, identified as a Z9 chopper, crashed into a wooded area in Adansi Sikaman, located in the Ashanti Region.

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the helicopter took off from Accra at 0912hrs and was en route to Obuasi when the incident occurred. Eyewitnesses reported an explosion followed by smoke rising from the forest shortly before emergency services arrived.

The victims include:

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence

  • Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed – Minister for Environment

  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chairman of the NDC

  • Mr. Samuel Aboagye – Former Parliamentary Candidate

  • Squadron Leader Peter

  • Flying Officer Twum Ampadu

  • Sergeant Ernest Addo

Dr. Boamah was a renowned physician and seasoned politician. He previously served as Minister for Communications and Presidential Spokesperson under President John Mahama. He held a master’s degree in Health Policy from the London School of Economics and was an active youth leader during his school years.

His contributions to national development include chairing environmental investigations, promoting cyber safety and child online protection, and establishing Ghana’s National Computer Emergency Response Team. He returned to medical practice after the 2016 elections at Afrah International Hospital.

This tragedy marks one of the darkest days in Ghana’s recent political history. The nation is observing a national day of mourning, and further investigations are ongoing.
