The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Henry Nana Boakye has reiterated the party’s determination to prevail in its role of providing constructive criticism to President Mahama’s Government, despite a a concerted effort at suppressing dissenting views.
Boakye bemoaned the state-sponsored harassments, unfairness in the application of the law and the perceived proscription of free speech, which have characterised President Mahama’s 9 month old Government. He expressed regret that the criminal libel law, a key feature of the PNDC era, seems to have made a subtle come-back on the back of some unwarranted arrests over free speech made in recent months.
According to Nana Boakye, leading members of the NPP had been clearly targeted in an attempt to deter the party’s agenda and cower especially its vociferous members into silence. “We in the NPP remain undeterred and will not be intimidated by the weaponisation of state institutions targeting opposition members”, Boakye said.
Some leading figures of the party, including its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly referred to as “Chairman Wontumi”, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and many others, have been victims to several inexplicable national security interruptions.
The National Young Wing of the NPP led a massive demonstration march on the streets of Accra to protest the abuse of powers under the current administration.
