Chief’s Brother Allegedly Shot Dead …By Armed Men Linked To PRP Mining Site

Fear and tension have gripped Gwira Ampasie in the Nzema East area following the fatal shooting of a resident by persons alleged to be security personnel connected to PRP Mining Company Limited.
The deceased, believed to be a brother of a local resident identified as Nana Mensah, was reportedly shot on Sunday, May 24, 2026, triggering outrage among residents and renewed concerns over illegal mining activities in the area.
Community members claim the mining company is linked to widespread environmental destruction and insecurity in several communities, including Dominase, Ampasie, Awroso, Abalebo and Kokolvel, where illegal mining operations are alleged to be taking place along tributaries of the Ankobra River.
Residents allege that PRP Mining Company Limited belongs to Armah Kofi Buah and a Canadian associate identified as Simon.
The allegations have not been independently verified, and no official response has yet been issued by the minister or the company.
Some residents also linked the company to an earlier incident in which a person identified as Major Maham was reportedly killed at a mining site.
According to local sources, heavily armed security personnel protecting mining concessions have allegedly intimidated residents and heightened fears in the affected communities.
The chief, Nana Kofi Mensah and people of Gwira Ampasie are now calling on John Dramani Mahama to urgently intervene and halt the operations of PRP Mining Company Limited.
Residents claim nearly 10 people have allegedly lost their lives in incidents connected to the company’s activities over the years, though these claims could not be independently confirmed at the time of filing this report.
“The company is destroying our lands and people continue to die, yet nothing has been done,” the chief said.
Residents say the continued mining activities have polluted water bodies, destroyed farmlands and affected fishing activities in the area.
“The river used to be clean, but now the water is muddy and unsafe. Farming and fishing are becoming difficult for us,” another resident said.
Community leaders and civic groups are demanding independent investigations into both the shooting incident and the alleged illegal mining activities, as well as stronger enforcement actions against operators accused of degrading the environment.
At the time of publication, neither the police nor government officials had issued an official statement on the shooting incident or the allegations surrounding PRP Mining Company Limited.
