Old Tafo MP Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah Champions Bright Future for Women’s Football
Accra, August 1, 2025 — In a moment of pride and purpose, Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, has reaffirmed his unwavering support for women’s football following a recent engagement with the captain of Ghana’s Black Queens.
The Black Queens, who recently clinched a bronze medal at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, were honored in Parliament for their inspiring performance—their best since 2016. Among them was the team captain, a proud resident of Pankrono in the Old Tafo Constituency.
Following the event, Hon. Assafuah shared a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter) on July 30, 2025. Accompanied by a photo of himself with the captain, he wrote:
“Standing with the Captain of the Black Queens, who lives in Pankrono, right here in our Old Tafo Constituency. Let’s continue to support our Queens as they lift the flag of Ghana high.”
The post was widely shared and praised, highlighting Assafuah’s pride in his constituent’s achievements and his commitment to uplifting Ghanaian women in sports.
During a Parliamentary session on July 21, 2025, Assafuah credited the Black Queens’ success to deliberate policies and investments made by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. “The Black Queens’ achievement is a testament to deliberate policies and sustained support for women’s sports,” he stated, urging that these efforts be maintained and expanded.
Speaking candidly on Asempa FM’s Sports Nite program on July 30, 2025, Assafuah addressed public interest surrounding a donation made by former President John Mahama to the Black Queens. As the Ranking Member on the Sports Committee in Parliament, he called for financial transparency:
“I urge President Mahama to clarify the exact amount donated to the team. Our athletes deserve open and accountable support.”
His comments emphasized the need for clear and consistent support structures to foster trust and boost morale among athletes.
Assafuah’s passion for Ghanaian sports isn’t limited to women’s football. On March 21, 2025, he visited the Black Stars during a training session ahead of their World Cup Qualifier against Chad. Urging focus, he reminded the team, “As professionals, maintaining concentration for the full 90 minutes is vital. A single moment can make all the difference.”
With his continued advocacy, Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah is carving a vision of hope, investment, and pride in Ghana’s sporting landscape. His engagement with the Black Queens captain is more than symbolic—it’s a call to action for all Ghanaians to unite in support of a bright and competitive future for women’s football.
