GMA Gives Government 3 Days to Reverse Suspension of KATH CEO, Backs Striking Doctors

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has thrown its full support behind doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) who are on strike, describing the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, as “without basis.”
In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday, June 6, 2026, after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council, the GMA demanded that the government immediately withdraw the suspension and reinstate the CEO within three working days.
The Association also criticised the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, accusing him of inciting the public against health workers.
The GMA defended the decision by KATH management to temporarily suspend new admissions at the Accident and Emergency Centre, describing it as “the right and proper professional and administrative decision” in line with best global practices for patient safety.
According to the GMA, the action did not amount to turning patients away but rather involved redirecting them to nearby facilities with support from KATH specialists, leading to effective decongestion within 24 hours.
“Council, therefore, is of the considered view that the initial query issued and subsequent directive for suspension were without basis and ought not to have been occasioned,” the statement read.
The GMA reaffirmed its full backing for the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA) decision to withdraw services until the suspension is lifted and concrete measures are taken to improve emergency capacity in the Kumasi enclave.
The development comes amid heightened tensions following the temporary closure of new admissions at KATH’s Accident and Emergency Centre due to severe overcrowding.
