Government Deploys Armoured Buses on Major Highways to Fight Highway Robbery

The government has deployed armoured buses on major highways across Ghana as part of intensified measures to combat highway robbery and enhance the safety of passengers.

The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, announced that the armoured buses are being operated under different transport brands to enable security agencies to monitor movement patterns and track criminal activities along key transport routes.

He made the disclosure during President John Dramani Mahama’s “Resetting Ghana” citizens’ engagement programme in the Savannah Region, expressing confidence that the initiative would significantly reduce attacks on travellers.

“One of the major challenges that we used to have was the long stretch where armed robbers block people, and then they take all their resources,” he said.

“Today, under the watch of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, we’ve acquired armoured buses, and these armoured buses have been doing a wonderful thing on most of our long stretch routes because we keep branding them differently.”

The Minister explained that the buses are periodically rebranded under different transport identities as a deliberate operational strategy.

“Today we’ll brand them as STC, the next day we’ll brand them as VIP, another day we’ll brand them OA, just make sure that we get the perpetrators,” he stated.

Muntaka Mubarak commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and his team for their efforts in tackling highway crimes, saying the police have recorded several arrests of armed robbers.

“I can assure you the IGP and his team are doing excellently. We’ve been getting a lot of their highway armed robbers,” he said.

He added that the government expects the intervention to make Ghana’s highways much safer than in previous years.
