The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has announced that eight suspects have been arrested in connection with the recent violent incidents that occurred during the Ablekuma North by-election.

Speaking at a meeting between the Police leadership and executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Yohuno confirmed that the suspects are currently being processed and will soon be arraigned before court.

“As of yesterday, I got eight suspects. They are being processed, and from the advice I had from the regional commander, tomorrow or Friday, all these suspects will be put before court,”

The IGP assured the public that the police are committed to delivering justice, stressing that anyone who failed to act professionally during the elections will also face accountability.

Journalist Assault Case

Mr. Yohuno also addressed concerns over the officer who assaulted a journalist during the by-election. He clarified that the officer was not transferred, but rather interdicted.

“Within the shortest possible time, we withdrew this policeman, and also what we did was to interdict him. When you are interdicted, your uniform is taken away, and you cannot go back to work. Rumours that he was transferred are false,” he explained.

The Police Professional Standards Bureau has since completed its investigation into the officer’s conduct. The IGP confirmed that a disciplinary service enquiry will be conducted, and appropriate sanctions will follow.

“Just yesterday, I received a report from the Professional Standards Bureau recommending that we go ahead with disciplinary action through our service orders against the officer,” he added.

This development signals the Police administration’s readiness to ensure transparency, accountability, and professionalism in electoral security operations.
