Minority leader, Afenyo-Markin, demands that AI-based security recruitment tests be abolished.

The Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged the government to immediately discontinue the use of artificial intelligence-based aptitude tests in the ongoing recruitment exercise for the country’s security services, arguing that the system is unfairly disadvantaging applicants from rural communities.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, the Effutu MP noted that many prospective recruits had complained about serious difficulties in navigating the online testing platform.

He disclosed that several Minority members had received numerous reports from constituents who were unable to complete the tests because of limited digital literacy and technical problems.

“I am for AI. I am for IT. But you cannot suddenly call someone from Pusiga or Bunkurugu who knows nothing about IT and ask them to write an aptitude test using AI,” Afenyo-Markin stated, calling on the authorities to rethink the approach.

He suggested that applicants should instead be allowed to sit the aptitude tests manually, as was done in previous recruitment exercises conducted by the military.

According to him, the current digital system has compelled many applicants to pay for access to internet cafés, only for some to still encounter technical glitches that prevent them from advancing in the recruitment process.

Afenyo-Markin stressed that the matter should not be politicised but addressed as a systemic challenge requiring urgent intervention from the relevant authorities.

Recruitment into Ghana’s security services has increasingly adopted digital platforms in recent years as part of efforts to modernise public-sector processes and minimise human interference in selection.

However, critics contend that this shift risks unintentionally excluding qualified applicants from communities with poor access to digital infrastructure and training.

The Minority Leader therefore called on the government to review the system without delay to guarantee that the recruitment process remains fair, transparent, and accessible to all qualified Ghanaians across the country.
