Rescue teams have pulled two people alive and recovered two bodies after a building collapsed at Gyegyeano in Cape Coast, authorities said on Sunday.
The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), working alongside the Ghana National Fire Service and other emergency responders, has been conducting search and rescue operations at the site since early morning.
According to NADMO’s Central Region office, the two survivors a married couple were rescued alive and rushed to hospital. The man was taken to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, while the woman was transported to the Ewim Polyclinic.
The two deceased, identified as their children, a 39-year-old woman and a 13-year-old girl were confirmed dead at the scene.
Emergency teams, including regional rapid response units and volunteers, continue to work at the site as authorities investigate the cause of the collapse.
Prolonged Downpour Triggers Flooding
The tragedy occurred amid widespread flooding in Cape Coast following several hours of heavy rainfall that inundated roads, homes, shops, and workplaces across several communities.
NADMO has urged the public to stay away from the affected area to allow responders to carry out operations without obstruction.
The flooding displaced many residents, stranded commuters, and caused severe traffic congestion in parts of the metropolis. Overflowing drains and choked waterways forced large volumes of water into residential areas and business premises.
Portions of the University of Cape Coast campus were also flooded, with the Casford area being the worst hit.
The heavy rains, which began around 7:00 a.m. on Friday, June 19, persisted for several hours, disrupting transportation, business activities, and academic work across the city.
The situation was worsened by plastic waste and other debris carried by the floodwaters, highlighting ongoing concerns about poor waste management and its contribution to recurring flooding in the metropolis.
