Afenyo-Markin Files Lawsuits Against Sammy Gyamfi, Media Houses and NDC Official Over Extortion Claims
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has filed lawsuits against GoldBod Chief Executive Sammy Gyamfi, two media organisations and an NDC official over allegations of extortion made against him.
Afenyo-Markin announced the legal action in Parliament on Monday, saying he had chosen to submit himself to the judicial process following the allegations.
“Mr Speaker, in the face of the allegations of extortion leveled against me, I have chosen to take high moral ground by submitting myself to the processes of the law,” he said.
The Effutu MP said writs had been filed in separate cases at the Accra High Court and the Achimota Circuit Court.
According to Afenyo-Markin, one case, GT 1029/2026, is against Sammy Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited, while another, GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, names Eric Adjei and Peace FM as defendants.
He said he was confident that the courts would determine the matter appropriately.
“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time, the court will make the appropriate determination on these matters,” he said.
The Minority Leader also challenged those who had accused him of extortion to report the allegations to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
“I also await with bated breath that the man or the men who made the allegation will have the courage to report the matter to the police or the OSP or any investigating agency in this country,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin said he would cooperate fully with any investigation if a formal complaint was made.
“If I am invited, I shall submit myself to every investigation so that eventually my name is cleared,” he said.
He warned that political debate had limits and said allegations of this nature should be dealt with through appropriate legal channels.
“There is a limit to political discourse. There are lines that must not be crossed and these red lines, once crossed, they must be dealt with,” he said.
The lawsuits follow an increasingly heated public dispute between Afenyo-Markin and Gyamfi over Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and reported losses associated with the scheme.
Afenyo-Markin has been pressing for greater scrutiny of the programme and has called for a parliamentary inquiry into reported losses of about $1.7 billion.
Gyamfi has defended GoldBod and rejected attempts to attribute the entire reported loss to the institution.
The dispute intensified after Gyamfi allegedly described Afenyo-Markin as an “extortionist”, a characterisation the Minority Leader has rejected as defamatory.
Afenyo-Markin had earlier threatened legal action over the remark before announcing the filing of the suits in Parliament.
