Ghana losing economic sovereignty to foreign investors- Hassan Ayariga

Dr Hassan Ayariga, the Founder and Leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), has cautioned that Ghana is progressively ceding control of its economy to foreign investors, characterising the pattern as a takeover rather than true investment.

Appearing on The Pulse on March 6, Dr Ayariga recognised the advantages of foreign investment but cautioned that the escalating foreign dominance in vital sectors like housing, banking, and large-scale businesses represents a grave danger to Ghana’s economic independence.

Dr Ayariga also indicated that, under his potential presidency, limitations would be imposed on foreign property ownership.

“If I am president, I don’t want any foreigner to own property. You can invest your money, yes, but when you’re buying almost everything, land, businesses, companies, you’re losing control,” he declared.

He added that foreigners are increasingly establishing foundations to gain political leverage in Ghana.

“They are building up structures to ensure they have children in Ghana who can run for ministerial or parliamentary elections, and even the presidency. This is a serious threat to our economic and political sovereignty.”

Dr Ayariga warned that industries such as banking, housing, and commerce are experiencing heightened foreign influence, which he claims weakens the ability of native Ghanaians to derive full advantages from their own economy.

“We are losing economically. In banking, business, housing foreigners are gaining more control than indigenous Ghanaians. We are losing our sovereignty.”

Dr Ayariga advocated for heightened awareness and stringent oversight to ensure that foreign investment promotes national growth instead of displacing domestic ownership and authority.

“We must protect Ghanaian interests while welcoming investment that genuinely benefits our people. Otherwise, we risk losing both our economy and our future.”
