A renowned Multi-media broadcast journalist known for his award-winning investigations into environmental health hazards, Erastus Asare Donkor has expressed his ambivalence about the success of the fight against the galamsey menace. This comes at a time when top officials of the government had hinted of the most aggressive fight ever, on the back of the unfortunate August 6th crash that claimed the lives of the gallant eight.
In a Facebook-authored post, Mr Asare Donkor referred to a viral video of the Chairman of the Small Scale Miners Association, Kojo Peprah in which Mr Peprah was seen announcing the withdrawal of the IGP taskforce at Galamsey sites.
“We have made the IGP Taskforce defunct as of tonight, all members of the taskforce have been recalled and by tomorrow, they would no longer exist, everybody can go back to their mining sites with their equipment to work”, Mr. Peprah intimated.
According to Erastus, his checks indicated that the IGP’s taskforce had indeed been withdrawn. He cautioned journalists and Ghanaians to brace themselves for what is likely a degeneration of the menace, contrary to the renewed hope that many had expressed in the new government’s fight against galamsey.
The Government or IGP is yet to confirm the veracity of the news about the withdrawal of the taskforce or the justification for it.
