The NPP Vice-Presidential candidate for the 2024 Election and former Energy and Education Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has affirmed his solid commitment to the vision of his former boss, Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen on Wednesday 26th August 2025 with Philip Osei Bonsu, Dr Opoku Prempeh said he had no reason not to support Dr Bawumia as he believes he’s the NPP’s best choice for the 2028 General Elections. “Whatever I can do to support Dr Bawumia to get elected, I will do it”, Napo declared.
Dr Opoku Prempeh said he’s been fortunate to have worked with almost all the aspiring presidential candidates and that whilst all of them were loyal members of the party and he would work with whichever of them that emerges victorious, he’s persuaded that his former boss stood tall.
Responding to the allegations made by Dr Bawumia’s contenders about his failure as a candidate, given the party’s historic defeat in the last elections, Napo said that the election generally had a low voter turn out and that the opposition candidate, now President John Mahama, did not gain any significant vote appreciation either. He intimated that it was the NPP whose members did not vote massively and that the reasons for the apathy would best be explained by the Ocquaye report when the party decides to finally make it public. He hoped that the report would be made public after the Presidential primaries to put the speculations about the last elections to rest.
Dr Opoku Prempeh analysed that beyond the 65% low voter turnout in the last elections, the NDC lost about 4% of their usual votes in the Volta Region and 5% in Greater Accra. He is confident that Dr Bawumia at the appropriate time, would reflect and determine who he would want to partner with for the next election to appreciate the party’s vote and clinch victory. Until then, he remains committed to helping him get elected by the party in the upcoming January 31st Primaries.
