On 29 July 2026, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) arrested eight suspected illegal miners, comprising six Ghanaians and two Chinese nationals, during an operation at Sikaniasem in the Akontombra District of the Western North Region.
The operation targeted illegal mining activities affecting an unnamed stream and a forest area. During the raid, the Taskforce located three excavators, retrieved critical components from some of the machines, and destroyed two water pumps.
A Toyota Land Cruiser V8 and a generator were also seized at the site. The arrested suspects and seized items have been secured for further investigation and appropriate legal action.
NAIMOS continues to investigate the wider network of individuals suspected of financing and facilitating illegal mining in the area.
