Dagbon overlord Ya Naa Abukari Mahama II passes on

The Kingdom of Dagbon in northern Ghana is in mourning following the official announcement of the death of its overlord, Ya Naa Abukari Mahama II.
His eldest son, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu, has been enskinned as regent to oversee the affairs of the kingdom during the transition period.
The passing of Ya Naa Abukari II, also known as Gariba II, was formally announced after royal drummers and warriors performed the traditional rites in line with Dagbon custom, a palace source confirmed.
Enskinned in January 2019, the late overlord was widely credited with promoting peace and unity in one of Ghana’s oldest kingdoms. During his six-year reign, he led efforts to amend the Dagbon constitution to reflect modern governance, facilitated a smooth transition of traditional leadership, and spearheaded the redevelopment of the Gbewaa Palace, which is nearing completion along with several other initiatives.
In accordance with Dagbon tradition, the eldest son assumes the role of regent when the throne becomes vacant. Kampakuya Naa Yakubu will therefore serve as caretaker, managing the administration of the kingdom and coordinating with divisional chiefs until a new Ya Naa is selected and enskinned.
“The office of the regent is one of great significance,” a palace statement said. “He acts on behalf of the Dagbon throne, maintaining stability and preserving customs during the period of mourning.”
Traditional leaders and residents are expected to rally behind the regent as the kingdom observes mourning rites and prepares for the customary processes to select the next overlord.
