Court Strikes Out Case Involving Teacher and Student at Nyinahin Catholic SHS

A district court has struck out the case involving a teacher and a student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School, whose physical altercation went viral on social media.

The decision, delivered by the Toase District Court on Wednesday, June 10, has eased tensions at the school after teachers threatened to boycott the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) over the teacher’s arrest and detention.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Ashanti Region had issued a strong warning, stating that educators would embark on industrial action if the teacher, who also serves as a hostel caretaker, was not released.

In a statement signed by Regional Secretary D.K. Atakora, GNAT criticised the prolonged detention and called for his immediate release on bail. The union had threatened to direct teachers at Nyinahin Catholic SHS and across the district to boycott the WASSCE examinations if the matter was not resolved swiftly.

However, the legal proceedings came to an abrupt end after the court struck out the case, bringing relief to students, teachers, and school authorities.

The incident had sparked widespread public discussion following the circulation of the video showing the confrontation between the teacher and the student.
