Gbetsile Residents Accuse Ghana Water Limited of “Daylight Robbery” Amid Prolonged Water Shortage

Residents of Gbetsile and surrounding communities, including Apolonia and Kakasunanka, have strongly criticised Ghana Water Limited over unfair billing practices, describing the situation as “daylight robbery” as they endure nearly seven months without regular water supply.

The prolonged water crisis has forced many households to depend on expensive private water vendors and, in some cases, unsafe alternative sources to meet their daily needs.

According to residents, the shortage has severely disrupted daily life, business activities, sanitation, and personal hygiene, with repeated complaints to authorities yielding little or no improvement.

The Assembly Member for the area told Channel One News on Friday, May 29, that the community can no longer tolerate the poor service delivery, especially since residents continue to receive water bills despite the lack of supply.

Frustrated residents took to the streets in protest, linking their action to growing anger over the water crisis and a recent tragedy in which a six-year-old child reportedly drowned while trying to fetch water from a septic tank.

One resident, speaking during the demonstration, appealed to authorities for urgent intervention.

“We are appealing to management and duty bearers to urgently intervene and ensure water flows in this community. We don’t need technical explanations; we need water. If water is flowing, this protest will not happen. This is not political. It is a fight for our basic rights,” the resident said.
