“Romantic Ties in NDC Politics? Dafeamekpor’s Birthday message to Ebi Bright Ignites Social Media”

A social media birthday message by South Dayi MP and Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor to Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive Ebi Bright has led to speculation that the two leaders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are married. On Tuesday, May 19, Mr Dafeamekpor wished Ms Bright a heartfelt birthday in a thoughtful message on his X (formerly Twitter) page along with elegant, striking images of her. What really struck an echo of interest to the public was the personal message. The outspoken MP wrote:
“A very special happy birthday wish to this brilliant woman, a sweet wife and a wonderful mother. From the entire family, we wish you good health and the fortitude of mind as you continue to transform your beloved Tema, as Mayor. Tons of Love & a mighty hug from me & the kids. Spiritus Invictus!!!!”

The post went viral in no time, beginning a fierce conversation on social media. Many users zeroed in on the phrase “sweet wife and wonderful mother,” interpreting this confirmation as proof that the two are husband and wife. Some saw the reactions as an unreasonable disruption of the private lives of public figures, whereas others were taken aback, pointing out that he and Bright are well-known politicians in the NDC.
Mr Dafeamekpor has been one of Ebi Bright’s most strident allies, and of particular protection for his party, during the bitter fight over the Tema Central parliamentary election petition in the wake of the 2024 general elections. Many at the time interpreted his support as political loyalty and professional devotion, given that he is a lawyer involved in relevant legal matters. But Tuesday’s emotional message has prompted many to return to that support with new interest. In a cutthroat political environment in Ghana, high-profile politicians rarely make their personal relationships public. This is thought to be one of the reasons Mr Dafeamekpor’s post received so much attention.
Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor is one of Parliament’s most high-powered and combative lawmakers, making news on constitutional and governance matters on an unusually regular basis. Ebi Bright, however, transitioned from the world of acting and journalism to become one of the relevant politicians and is currently a prominent Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema. Whether the birthday message was merely a love letter from husband to wife or affectionate language shared by close political allies is only known to the two people. The development, however, has left plenty speculating whether the two could soon become Ghana’s first couple of legislators sitting in Parliament.
