Ashanti NPP Caucus Demands Urgent Action Over Suame Market Fire

The Ashanti NPP Parliamentary Caucus has called for immediate and decisive government intervention following the devastating fire that razed the Suame Post Office Market, destroying more than 300 shops and leaving thousands of traders in despair.

In a statement signed by its secretary, Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Caucus expressed deep sympathy to affected traders but stressed that words of condolence were no longer enough.

They described the recurring market fires in the Ashanti Region as a worrying trend that has repeatedly destroyed years of hard work and investment by ordinary Ghanaians.

“We are compelled to ask: where is the urgency, where is the accountability, and where is the concrete plan from government to stop these recurring disasters?” the statement read, warning against what it described as “business-as-usual attitudes” from authorities.

The Caucus outlined four key demands: a full-scale transparent investigation into the Suame fire with findings made public, emergency relief and compensation packages for affected traders, the urgent rollout of modern fire safety infrastructure in markets, and a comprehensive policy framework to permanently address market fires in the Ashanti Region.

According to the Caucus, the matter will be raised forcefully on the floor of Parliament, as they owe it to hardworking traders whose livelihoods sustain both the local and national economy.

“The time for rhetoric is over; the time for decisive action is now,” the statement emphasized, vowing to stand with the traders of Suame until their safety, livelihoods, and dignity are secured.
