Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has strongly criticized the government over what he describes as a deceptive and inadequate increase in cocoa producer prices. Speaking in an interview on Pure FM, Assafuah alleged that the government is using state influence and financial inducements to pressure media houses into staying silent on the issue.
The lawmaker, a known advocate for transparency and farmers’ welfare, referenced the government’s earlier promise to significantly increase cocoa prices to support farmers. However, the recent adjustment—from GHS 3,100 in 2024 to only GHS 3,228.75 per bag—has sparked outrage.
“In 2024, the price of a bag of cocoa was GHS 3,100. After all the lofty promises of the NDC, the new price is just GHS 3,228.75. Is this the heaven on earth you promised us?” Assafuah questioned.
He further described the GH¢128 increase as a betrayal to Ghana’s hardworking cocoa farmers who contribute immensely to the economy.
“This is a slap in the face to our farmers,” Assafuah stated. “And instead of helping them, the government is allegedly paying some media houses to keep quiet.”
Calling for transparency and accountability, Assafuah urged the media and civil society organizations to rise above political influence and speak for the voiceless farmers. He reminded Ghanaians of cocoa’s vital role in the nation’s economy, warning that continued neglect of farmers will undermine national development.
He emphasized that independent journalism should be used to defend the interest of farmers, not shield the government from criticism.
This bold statement from Assafuah is already stirring reactions across the political spectrum, as stakeholders question the fairness of the pricing process and the media’s role in national development.
